Words of Advice from Peggy Post on Wedding Invitations

October 25th, 2010

We are often asked advice on the proper etiquette for wedding invitations.  I received this great article from Peggy Post via the National Stationery Show Newsletter, and I couldn’t help but share it with you here. Peggy & NSS, thanks as always for the great advice! Brides, if you don’t have a copy of Emily Post’s Etiquette guide, head on over to Amazon.com and grab a copy! Emily is the Goddess of Etiquette. Her   Here are Peggy’s helpful hints below.

One Envelope or Two?

Traditionally, a wedding invitation is sent in two envelopes, an outer envelope which is addressed and stamped, and an inner envelope—containing the invitation, reception card, reply card and other material such as directions—which bears the names of the people invited. Although it may seem complicated or overly formal, a second envelope is actually very practical because it clarifies exactly who’s invited: other family members, children, and whether or not an invited guest may bring a guest. It’s perfectly acceptable, however, for a couple to omit inner envelopes.

What’s Written on the Envelopes?

The outer envelope is addressed with the names and address of the person(s) invited: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. The inner envelope repeats the guests’ last names: Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It’s also fine to informally write the names of close relatives and friends: Grandmother, Aunt Sue, or Jessica and Henry on the inner envelope.Addressing Envelopes 101:

Addressing a married couple:

Wedding invitations are always addressed to both members of a married couple, even though the bride and groom may know only one or think that only one will attend.

Addressing an unmarried couple living together:

Invitations to an unmarried couple residing at the same place are addressed to Ms. Nancy Fellows andMr. Scott Dunn.

Addressing a married woman doctor or two married doctors:

If the woman uses her husband’s name, the address is: Dr. Barbara and Mr. James Werner. If she uses her maiden name: Dr. Barbara Hanson and Mr. James Werner. If her husband is also a doctor and they use his last name, the address is either:The Doctors (or Drs.) Werner, or Drs. Barbara and Robert Werner.

Handwrite envelopes:

Wedding invitations are special. Address them in handwriting—the bride’s, groom’s, friend’s, host’s, or a calligrapher’s. No computer-printed labels!

Avoid abbreviations:

Street and Avenue are written out, although two-letter state abbreviations are okay (due to US Postal Service preference). A person’s middle name may or may not be used. If it is, write it in full instead of abbreviating; omit it if the name won’t fit on one line. It’s okay to abbreviate Mr.Mrs.Ms., and Dr. when addressing envelopes.

Inviting guests for guests:

Write “and Guest” on the inner envelope right after the invited guest’s name. If no inner envelope is used, the “and Guest” phase is not written on the outer one; instead a note is included in the invitation or a verbal invitation is extended by the couple: “Please bring someone with you.”

Inviting children:

If children are invited, their names are written on a line below their parents’ names on the inner envelope. If no inner envelope is used, children’s names are written on the outer envelope. Children aged thirteen and over usually receive their own invitations.

Using a return address:

A return address is necessary for the US Postal Service. The USPS preferred place is the upper left-hand corner of the envelope, but the back flap is okay, too.

Swoon Worthy Details: Kerianne & Ryan

September 15th, 2010

Every once in a while there is a wedding that just makes your jaw drop.  As you will see in the images below, there is no other way to describe what Kerianne envisioned for her day other than jaw droppingly beautiful.

We were lucky enough to meet Kerianne last year, when we were helping Stephanie & Andy with their Turner Hill wedding.  Kerianne is a very talented florist (again, see pictures below!) at Les Fleurs in Andover, Ma.  She and Jill instantly clicked, and Kerianne immediately asked Jill and I to help her with day of coordination for her wedding this summer.  We couldn’t have been more flattered.

The wedding took place at a very special place for Kerianne and her family; the dance studio that she had been involved in since she was a young girl.  What an unusual but gorgeous space for a wedding!!  The flowers, of course, were done by the talented team at Les Fleurs (including Kerianne herself, who was working on them until the last minute Thursday evening!).   The table runners and chair backs were stitched with love by Kerianne throughout the Winter, and the escort cards and place cards soaked in tea for a vintage look.  Jill  served as DJ with the birde and groom’s I-tunes playlist set to the minute! We were also lucky enough to work with the very talented (and ridiculously sweet!) Laura Parent from relive.

Here are just a few glimpses of the beauty from that day. You can see more images at Laura’s blog, and I am sure you will see more of this wedding gracing the pages of bridal mags next year!

Kerianne and Ryan, thank you for letting us be a part of your beautiful day!

how gorgeous is that tablescape?

simply beautiful details. thanks again, kerianne!

Caroline & David: sneak peak!

August 23rd, 2010

We haven’t posted a wedding in a while (we’ve been very busy!!)… but this one is too cute not to share.

We had the pleasure of serving as the “month of” coordinators for Caroline & David’s wedding last weekend.  They also commissioned us to design and develop all of their paper products for the ceremony and reception.  Being track stars, they wanted us to bring a track and field theme to their reception! Each table was named with a different track and field event, and a pair of sneakers ”tied at the knot” adorned each place card.  Here are just a few snaps we took of their day. (By the way, we’ve never seen such a fit bridal party! I think 90% of them run or ran track!)

We were thrilled to work alongside Maureen Ford and can’t wait to see images she captured.  Maureen, thanks again for introducing us to the adorable couple!  The gorgeous flowers were designed by Madison Floral.

The “Olivia” Invite

August 19th, 2010

We recently designed some pretty adorable Christening invitations for a very adorable baby. (Of course, names, places, and dates have been changed for privacy)  We couldn’t resist sharing! And, if you haven’t already, don’t forget to visit our new Etsy shop!

Lovin’ my poms

July 29th, 2010

So earlier this week I shared with you a glimpse of just how crazy I went with fun details… well, here’s another peek:

I originally bought these tissue poms for my bridal shower but they didn’t arrive quite in time, so I decided to recycle them for some wedding day decor.  The night before our wedding, while my future husband and his friends were out at the bar,  I was at my mom’s house decorating with my poms and taking pictures of all my details!  I am not SO much of a dork that I didn’t have  glass of wine  (ok maybe two…or three…) while decorating, but still, I have to laugh.  The poms came from Etsy (of course!).

PS. Advice to brides… glass of good red wine = good night of sleep on the eve of your wedding!

Fabulously Frivolous Details

July 26th, 2010

Along with planning all of the details for the wedding ceremony and reception, I had so much fun finding unique details to incorporate throughout the entire process.  (Umm, this is why I needed to only have a 6 month engagement, anything longer and I would have been broke!) One of my favorites was this custom dress hanger. I think Sue sent me the link to this Etsy shop before I was even engaged.  I, of course, filed the link away “just in case.”  These custom hangers make for adorable photo opps! I used it to hang my veil while getting ready at my mom’s house.  I thought it was too cut not to share with our favorite readers!

Sneak Peak of Jill’s Wedding… and an apology

July 8th, 2010

First, I must apologize to our blog for seriously neglecting it over the past month. Wedding season has gotten the best of us! Between client meetings, creating beautiful paper details, and weddings, there has been zero time for blogging! Blog, I am sincerely sorry.

So, as you all know, this past weekend was Jill’s wedding! She looked stunning. The flowers were amazing. The details were out of this world.  While Jill is off relaxing on her honeymoon (do you sense my jealousy?!), I thought I would share just a few pictures with our favorite readers (since so many of you have been asking me!).  We are dying to see the professional pictures from the insanely awesome Hitched Studios, but for now, you will have to accept my sub-par photography skills (usually Jill is the one documenting our weddings!).  I am sure Jill will post more details and maybe even some tutorials (I am sure you all want to know how she made those menus and table numbers) when she gets back!

How adorable are the table numbers? And the hand written note inside each escort card? Oh, and those menus, they were individually beaded by Jill’s own hands. Now that is a detail worth noting!

Congrats, Jill, on a well-planned beautifully detailed wedding! Now, get back to work… we’ve got other weddings to plan!

Design, Create, Inspire (with paper)

May 28th, 2010

Last week we told you we had some exciting news, and now we can finally share it with you. Details has officially become the newest member of the Envelopments family of dealers/designers! This exceptional line of fine papers is sure to inspire!

If you have a vision…an idea…a color palette…or if you are in need of some inspiration, this line will satisfy all of your creative desires! Guided by the inventive minds at Details, you can create custom invitations sure to set the perfect tone for any wedding, party, Bat Mitzvah, rehearsal dinner, or other important event.  And of course we can also assist you in creating other “details” such as place cards, escort cards, menus, and favor boxes creating your own custom couture paperie line for your big day!

Whether you want us to design and develop everything for you, or you prefer to take a shot at DIY and just order the paper through us, we would be happy to help!

We chose to work with Envelopments because the quality is remarkable. When you hold the paper in your hand, you will understand. The cardstock is a bit heavier, the metallic sheen just a bit nicer, and the mix of colors always on trend. Plus, their turnaround time is fantastic, which means you can have the product in your hands in a lot faster.

If you are interested in having Details help with any of your paper elements, please be in touch!

Paper Heaven

May 19th, 2010

This week, Jill and I had a fabulous time at the National Stationery Show. As most of you know by now, we’re pretty much obsessed with all things paper.  So the NSS was pretty much our version of heaven. Everywhere we looked was another beautiful display of stationery, cardstock, patterned paper, vellum, or ribbon. We wanted to share with you, our loyal readers, some of our favorites from the show.

The DIY of Letterpress:

We heart letterpress. And don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like the professional version; the double thick paper, the deep impression you can feel as you draw your hands over it, the rich color of the ink. Mmmm. But, this new at-home kit might just be good enough for some quick Holiday cards or a super-simple save-the-date. We’ve ordered one, and we’ll be sure to post some samples on our blog after it arrives!

drink me tags:

These wine and champagne bottle tags are adorable and affordable! Forget searching around for an awkwardly sized gift bag, these are a great way to present a bottle wine to the hostess at your next dinner party. We can see infinite uses at weddings—favors, welcome gifts in for your overnight guests, cute touches to the table wine.  They are completely customizable too!

Meri Meri Party Packs

Ok, so everyone knows about my obsession with ducks for baby showers and nurseries. I have found another new love. Animal Parades. How adorable are these carousel centerpieces for a toddler’s birthday party? And the cupcake kits? How cute would individual cupcakes be as party favors for the kids?

Those are just SOME of our favorite things from the show. The biggest, bestest thing to come of the show we’ll be announcing very soon. Stay tuned!
